How do you plan wedding reception music selections when there are so many conflicting guest requests and musical preferences??? 

First, take a deep breath!! You don’t need to impress ANYONE on your big day…

You should know that music selection is NOT you and partners’ sole responsibility to figure out. In fact, the team and Fusion Function discourages that! 

And most importantly, never settle when it comes to your reception expectations.

ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you want for the reception should be brought to life. 

In your DJ interviewing process, if you are told…

‘we don’t do that,’ 

‘that is not a request we can take’  

‘ we recommend that you go in a different direction with music,’ 

‘we need all your songs for the reception’ 

…..Run away! If you get any of the above responses, definitely seek alternative companies who care about, and focus on you.

While we do ask for a list of your priorities (in our online planning portal) you are not expected to choose EVERY song. After all you did hire a professional dj right? Couples sometimes ask “well how many songs should we add to our list”? There are a few ways to go about this.

1. The hands on approach. If you’d like to exercise a fair amount of control over your list we see on average about 60-80 items on the list between Must Plays and Play If Possibles. This still leaves your dj enough room to be creative and work a little on the fly.
2. The hands off approach. You let the team at Fusion Function take the wheel! Ad, believe it or not, we do see this alot. However, even when couples say this we STILL encourage at least a few priority selections (‘must play’ songs), anywhere from 10-15. This way we have a little bit of a safety net, while still exercising mostly creative on the fly control.

Either way, we will still absolutely crush the wedding! We like to think of this as a collaborative effort and we are happy to work with either method! 

In action, the seasoned DJs at Fusion Function are experts in reading the crowd, and know exactly when to move in and out of music genres, tempos and requests! We meet with you before your wedding day to plan out the basic framework/vibe for the reception. 

As a general rule, it is always smart to envision your dancefloor, and define at least a handful of key songs that you and your partner want to hear. From there, we do the rest!
